Today commemorates the Yahrtzeit of the esteemed Mr. Kalonymus Ze'ev Wissotzky (1824–1904), a distinguished businessman and philanthropist.
Hailing from a lineage of merchants near Kovno, Wissotzky embarked on his journey when he married at 18. Later, he enriched his knowledge and fear of Heaven at the renowned Volozhin yeshiva and studied under the venerable Rav Yisra'el Salanter.
Mr. Kalonymus Ze'ev Wissotzky founded the illustrious Wissotzky Tea Company in Russia, introducing a tapestry of exquisite tea flavors to the region. Starting humbly by peddling tea door to door, Wissotzky's dedication and zeal elevated his brand to be the appointed tea purveyor for the Emperor, amassing a loyal following across the Russian Empire and beyond.
Relocating to Moscow in 1858, Wissotzky's prowess in the tea realm transcended borders, extending to New York, London, and Europe. Not only a titan in commerce, but Wissotzky's altruism shone through as he devoted 10% of his earnings to charitable causes.
His benevolence reverberated as he championed Jewish settlements in Israel, sponsored projects in Jerusalem, and championed various Jewish initiatives.
In a testament to his philanthropy, Mr. Kalonymus Ze'ev Wissotzky bequeathed his tea company shares to Tzedaka, leaving an indelible mark on the business world and the realm of goodwill.
