On the Erev Shabbos of Shabbos Shira or on Shabbos Shira, many have a custom of giving bird-friendly seeds and bread crumbs to the birds to commemorate Shabbos Shira. This tradition stems from the wondrous past of Bnei Yisroel. When they crossed the sea during Kriyas Yam Suf, even the birds joined in song, and we expressed our recognition by sharing crumbs with our feathered mates. Another reason for this custom is the week's Torah portion, highlighting how Hashem miraculously sustained Bnei Yisroel with the Maan in the desert. By comparing the Jewish people to birds, we symbolize our easily accessible sustenance from Hashem, just as the Maan was for the Israelites. Although some oppose this custom based on halachic concerns, it is advisable to consult your local orthodox Rabbi for clarification.
