• Speech that states something negative about a person, even if true, is considered Lashon Hara (Evil Tongue).
• Hotzaat Shem Ra ("spreading a bad name") consists of lies and is considered an even graver sin than Lashon Hara.
• Gossiping is called Rechilut and is also prohibited by halakha.
• In Numbers 12, Miriam spoke negatively about Moses, resulting in punishment from God.
• Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan wrote two significant works on Evil Tongue: Chafetz Chaim and Shmirat HaLashon, their English adaptation Guard Your Tongue.
