The Jewish holiday of Purim is among the most joyous holidays on the Jewish calendar. It is a time to celebrate and recognize the miraculous victory of the Jews over their enemies in ancient Persia, as told in the Purim story in the book of Esther within the Torah. One key aspect of celebrating this holiday is drinking. Alcohol consumption is traditionally considered an essential part of many religious festivals, including Purim. The Talmud states it is a mitzvah (commandment) to get so intoxicated on Purim night that one cannot tell 'cursed be Haman' from 'blessed be Mordechai.' This suggests that drinking alcohol should not be considered immoral or forbidden on this holy day. In addition, drinking alcohol is seen as a way of remembering the ancient miracle and expressing joy in the present day. So, raising a glass or two on Purim night is customary to celebrate this memorable holiday! Yidden have a unique God-gifted opportunity to make the most mundane of matters holy, and it's up to us to elevate our entire purim experience. Raise a glass, raise your purim, and raise yourself.
